How Can We Not Move?

I was enjoying my free time tonight...two kids at Grandparents and the baby asleep upstairs.
I happened upon my friend Sharla's blog and read an entry that has had me weeping and nauseous for the last half hour.
It is important enough that I think you should read it.
And it should make us all furious and devastated...at the injustice in this world.
I am very comfortable living in America, with my new house and nice car; my healthy kids, my great neighbors, a bounty of savory and nutritious food.
I am safe here. I don't have to worry about a shortage of food, lack of clean water or some preventable illness like malaria killing my children.
Sharla's blog wasn't the first time that I've heard of injustice...It was just the first time that images so unimaginable, so evil stirred up a rising in my heart.
Let this be the last day that I (we) sit still in our comfort and complacency.
May we move and move quickly to end injustice, feed and serve the poor, take children into our homes, mother the motherless, father the fatherless.
I have wasted so many years not caring, not knowing, turning a blind eye to things that might be too painful for me to deal with.
I would rather turn on the televsion, or decorate my house, or go shopping for things I don't need than take the time to search out and care for those who are starving, dying, who don't have food and water.
I have not been Christ's hands and feet.

I pray that I can begin to live radically different.
And I pray for these children we read about it...that they will be fed, held, loved until we can touch them ourselves.

I know this work will look different for all of us....some of will stay here and work to end injustice here in the US, others will travel to other countries temporarily, some will move away to serve permanently.
Whatever you do... Do something.
On the left of my blog you will see several organizations listed with ways to care for children (Compassion, World Orphans, Buckner)...click on one of those links and begin to change a child's life now.

I need to clarify that I don't believe that we can't enjoy our lives and all the beauty in it.
But I would imagine if you examined your own life like I have mine, you will begin to see ways in which we all need to change.
Excess. Gluttony. Complacency. Fear. Ignorance. Indifference. Selfishness.
I would rather die a young woman feeding the hungry, rescuing the enslaved, clothing the naked than die an old lady who never lifted a finger to hold or feed a starving child.

I have a lot to work on.
Now go find yourself a quiet spot and read this and listen for what God would have you do about it.
(Yes, I'm bossy when I'm passionate about something)

So good, Liz.

Here's a quote from a book I'm reading right now called, "Revolution in World Missions" by Yohannan.

It's changing my life.

"Many North American Christians live isolated from reality - not only from the needs of the poor overseas, but even from the poor in their own cities. Amidst all the affluence live millions of terribly poor people left behind as Christians have moved into the suburbs. I found that believers are ready to get involved in almost any activity that looks spiritual but allows them to escape their responsibility to the Gospel."

I too am asking God to bring change. Bring it, God. Forgive me for all the things I busy myself with that you have not asked me to do, when I am IGNORING the things you have clearly COMMANDED me to do.

Praying with you...

Heather

Liz - thank you so much for your blog, and referencing back over to our site. I have been following "World Orphans" for about a year now, and guess because of my ties to real estate/construction, their work (constructing orphanages) really intrigues and moves me.

When I saw those images at 6am in the morning, I thought, "what a way to start my day"!! Then I realized (like you so very well described), I had just sat down with my new laptop, on my comfortable couch, with my thermostat at the perfect temperature, had just fed my 5mth. old her 5:30am feeding (never worrying about what was needed to make it), and knew I was going to have coffee and my breakfast a short time later. Then it hit me...this is exactly what I needed to start my day...to move me beyond my "excess, gluttony, complacency, fear, ignorance, indifference, selfishness", as you so well described.

Being the parents of small children, as you are, maybe it hits home even harder right now...either way, we should be moved. Moved to action. Moved immediately, because we are not promised tomorrow! -Brandon

Two Sidenotes:
-We're putting the new video from "Living Water's" Nicaragua trip on our site. We went to a Living Water banquet last year and can't wait for our opportunity to go "dig some wells"!

-We're also going to post Chris's new "Eight Dollar Hot Dog" video, on our site. It ties back into so much of what is going on. I think you have a wider "reading" audience than we do, so you should get it up on your site, as well.

Thanks Liz.
I linked to you on my blog.
My jaw is still dropped from this.

Have you read Irresistable Revolution by Shane Claiborne? It is great and rocking my world.

liz, i travel to bulgaria once every year with the heights and bulgarian child. i have SEEN these homes in person. in many of the homes, i know the children by name and they remember me. this film is an accurate account of conditions in bulgaria orphanages. not only for the handicapped but for normal children who are just not wanted and treated like they aren't even human. please, watch if you can bring yourself to. it is a fascinating video that has garnered much attention worldwide. my prayer is that finally, these children can be treated as Jesus would treat them. blessings, jan margrave

I just want you to know that I think about this quote all day long...can't get it out of my mind because it so perfectly puts what a HUGE part of my heart is crying out to say! It's in my thoughts almost every second as I'm bathing my girls in warm water, washing dishes with all the water I need, pulling out delicious food for lunch & dinner that I bought with cash, laying my baby down on clean sheets under the warmth of her blanket. I love you for your heart!! Thank you Liz!!

This has been impacting me for the past week or so. Brandon Marler sent me the link to this post and I can't stop thinking about this line in particular.

I want this to be true of me.

Thanks for the great words.
